HOPE SINGAPORE: PROJECT SPARKLE 2015
For the third year running, Hope Centre organised Project Sparkle to bless elderly residents in the community. Project Sparkle is a community project whereby we clean up 1-room rental apartments, where most elderly residents live alone.
Compared to last year, we saw an increase of almost 1000 volunteers. On 3rd and 4th January, 2600 volunteers were mobilised to clean 350 apartments in Chinatown, Kampong Glam and Punggol. Last year, we cleaned 150 flats but this year, we doubled the beneficiaries. The volunteers comprised of members from students, young adults, family and Filipino groups.
Residents could also exchange their old brooms, dustpans and mops for a brand new set as well. The volunteers also interacted with the residents as they worked away - filling the apartment with joy and forging new friendships.
Many of these residents were very blessed and look forward to the next clean up. One heart-warming story was when a group of volunteers found out that it was one particular auntie’s birthday on the day they cleaned her apartment. After the cleaning was done, they went to get a small cake and celebrated for her birthday with her. She was so happy and touched and commented that she has not had anyone celebrate her birthday for long time.
All in all, Project Sparkle 2015 was a success and was one of the largest turnouts we have seen. Project Sparkle is now known as a “household” name when it comes to mass spring cleaning.
