HOPE LIBERIA, AFRICA CHURCHES
INTRODUCING HOPE LIBERIA
It is a wonderful privilege to be involved in God's great global work. The vision of our movement is to be used by God to reach every nation in the world. Since 2009, a group of churches in Liberia under the leadership of Ps Sonny who, after much prayer, joined Hope International Ministries (HIM). Ps Brendan Kirby of Hope Adelaide has been the key contact person to facilitate this process. We warmly welcome Hope Liberia to be a part of our international movement, and look forward to extending God's kingdom together, growing and supporting one another. Hope Oceania has been tasked to provide covering and support to Hope Liberia churches.

Liberia & Hope Liberia
Liberia is situated on the west coast of Africa, bordered by Sierra Leone, Guinea, Cote d’Ivoire, and the Atlantic Ocean.
The country was colonized by American Colonization Society from 1821-22, where it was created as a place where the freed slaves from the United States were emigrated to Africa. These freed slaves formed an elite group in Liberian society, and, in 1847, they founded the Republic of Liberia, establishing a government modeled after the United States governmental structure.
A military-led coup in 1980, overthrew the government, which marked the beginning of a period of instability. The instability eventually led to civil war (started in 1989) that left hundreds of thousands of people dead and devastated the country's economy. The civil war ended in 2003.
Most part of the country including the capital, Monrovia is without water and electricity supply, as dams that generated electricity were destroyed during the war. As of mid-2006 Liberia was still dependent on foreign aid, and had a debt of $3.5 billion. As of 2003, Liberia had an estimated 85% unemployment rate, the second highest in the world.

Six churches in Hope Liberia

There are 6 churches that are part Hope Liberia: Hope Gbarnga, Foya, Monrovi, Voinjama, Belebende in Liberia, and N'zerekoro in Guinea (one of the refugee camps). These churches were pioneered by Ps Sonny since 2005, and are overseen by him. Ps Sonny is a gifted preacher. His preaching is passionate and practical, and draws people to holy living and cultivates desperation for lost souls. He has a burning desire to reach the lost in Liberia and the neighbouring countries.

We can support them by praying for them regularly in our prayer meetings - pray that the churches will grow spiritually strong and be a light to their nation. We can inform and update our local congregations about the situation in Liberia and about our churches there. We can support them through giving towards the work there. We can also go on a short term missions trip to encourage them and provide training.
In the coming years, we will be helping to train their leadership team and supporting them to plant more churches. We are also looking for opportunities to set up businesses and agricultural projects to create employment for the community. We plan to conduct yearly mission trips there.
